I AM DANNY GIANNELLA

I AM Co-founder and Design Director of Bower Studios

Bower is a New York City-based studio with a multidisciplinary approach to contemporary furniture, and they’re taking part in the I AM project. This New York City-based studio is comprised of partners Danny Giannella, Tammer Hijazi and Jeffrey Renz.

They aim to bring “unexpected objects and environments into people's lives.” When we saw furniture designed by Bower for the first time, we felt as though we were dreaming. It’s no wonder, since their designs are “familiar, yet otherworldly,” Danny says.

Bower has found the magical balance between functionality and aesthetics worthy of the coolest MoMa exhibition. They’ve been featured in Vogue, The New Yorker, or Refinery 29, to name just a few. Once your eyes come across any of their unique pieces of furniture, you will feel an irrepressible urge to nest.

" There are mundane things all around us that we don’t pay attention to. It’s fun to try to look at them with a special lens and draw out some interesting traits.”

“Drinking coffee and putting on some music” is all it takes to get Danny to work. “This morning, Cavern by Liquid Liquid set off my day pretty well.”

When his imagination gets stuck, he looks “for inspiration in the least obvious places. There are mundane things all around us that we don’t pay attention to. It’s fun to try to look at them with a special lens and draw out some interesting traits.”

“I feel like depending on the period in my life or even my day, time can compress or fly at much different rates. It’s also a constant given that all of us have no choice to be affected by…like gravity.”

Even though some may say that the mirrors Bower Studios produces are the key to happiness, Danny finds joy on “laying in the grass on a sunny day, half asleep.” He also loves “following rivers through forests.” He is “specifically concerned by the health of our rivers and oceans.”

The co-founder of Bower Studio admires Leonardo da Vinci because “he let himself follow his curiosities, even though they were overwhelmingly expansive.”

But if you ask him about some of his favorite art pieces, his answer is someone way closer to home: “I’m always moved by certain paintings by friend Terry Powers. I’m moved by them on multiple levels at the same time. They are aesthetically pleasing and interesting, but on a deeper level, they are made with a balance of incredible technical ability, and a raw looseness that’s really striking and inspiring to me.”

“Listen to your gut. If it’s not talking to you, step back and try another route.”

When it comes to his creative process he has it clear: “Listen to your gut. If it’s not talking to you, step back and try another route.”

Bower also emphasizes the importance of enjoying your creation process, and honoring what you create by being true to your personal vision: “Find something you truly love. Most of the time people are trying to “make it”, it’s not worth it in any form other than feeding your passion, so this is a crucial step to getting over the hump.”
